BURNLEY manager Owen Coyle has wasted no time in dipping into the January transfer market, but has come out unsuccessful in a bid to sign an unnamed Premier League player.
Although the player wasn't named by the Clarets, Todmorden News understands the bid to be for Middlesborough right back Tony McMahon, who was also strongly linked with a move to Turf Moor in the mornings national tabloids.
McMahon, 22, has had pr
evious Coca-Cola Championship experience through loan spells with both Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool, and Coyle is thought to be keen on taking the youngster, but admitted that cash was tight heading into the window.
"I was on the phone yesterday trying to sign a lad from a Premier League club. Initially we tried to get him on loan, but the club involved weren't prepared to do that.
"They were looking for a fee and to be fair to Brendan (Flood), he was trying to help me, but ultimately we couldn't get near.
"So we are trying our best, but in the meantime we will get on with it.
"Fans will know themselves how difficult it is globally in terms of tightening their own purse strings. What you have to do is try to juggle a few balls accordingly and that's what we have been trying to do."
Meanwhile, players maybe on their way out of Turf Moor in the window, as Coyle also confirmed talks were ongoing with a number of clubs. One of the players under discussion was Hungarian International goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly, who hasn't featured in a single Clarets game this season, being behind Peruvian Diego Penny and the outstanding Brian Jensen in the pecking order.
Coyle confirmed: "Hibernian have been on to us about Gabor. They had one or two irons in the fire and we let them know what was involved in terms of taking him on loan, but it never transpired.
"Falkirk have asked too and I've told them Gabor is available on loan. Now, it's obviously up to those clubs to come back and see if we can sort something financially.
"I have kept Gabor involved at every step and nothing will ever happen without the players being kept in the picture first."
Winger Steve Jones looks set to extend his loan deal with League Two side Bradford City this month, and Todmorden News also understands that Burnley have recieved enquiries about the loan availability of young strikers Jay Rodriguez and Alex MacDonald.
