VOLUNTEERS interested in campaigning for safer roads and streets, better public transport and more facilities for walking and cycling in the Upper Calder Valley are invited to attend a public meeting on Tuesday (July 24), 7.30pm at the White Lion Hotel, Hebden Bridge.
The Upper Calder Valley Renaissance Sustainable Transport Group, formerly known as the Getting About Group, has so far organised the provision of “How to Get About” information boards for towns in the upper valley, conducted a walking audit of Hebden
Bridge to pinpoint opportunities for improved pedestrian facilities, and spearheaded the launch of Friends of Hebden Bridge Station.

The group calls for better rail provision for the upper valley, including reconnection of the line between Todmorden and Burnley and a new station at Cornholme; better bus services, especially for the hilltop communities; and a focus on the needs of pedestrians and cyclists.

Spokesperson Myra James said: “Our aim is to encourage a shift away from private motor vehicles by promoting public transport, walking and cycling. The pressure of growing traffic volumes is damaging our local environment, with pollution levels in some areas already exceeding legal limits. With the development of new housing throughout the valley, it is vital that there are plenty of alternatives to the motor car if we are to avoid further congestion and road danger.”

The Sustainable Transport Group works with other organisations, including local councils and Metro, to achieve safer, healthier and more environmentally friendly travel in the Upper Calder Valley. Anyone who can’t attend the meeting but would like to keep up-to-date with the group’s activities, phone Nina on 842651 or email myra.james@3-c.coop.
