Community spirit, and pairs of hands

Volunteers ready to tackle tidying work at Mount Zion Methodist Chapel, Cornholme

RESIDENTS have shown community spirit, taking on the responsibility for tidying up the graveyard at a former church site.

Last autumn residents met with Methodist church officials angry after stone from the graveyard at the former Mount Zion Church, Burnley Road, Cornholme, had been sold.

Church representatives said when the church building was there with a working church community, they had relied on them to maintain graveyards but Mount Zion had closed several decades ago.

The sale would help finance maintenance of church property and remove temptation from would-be thieves who might be attracted to possible pickings from the roadside site.

It was suggested the local community get involved in its maintenance - and they have.

On Sunday, September 16, residents turned up despite the weather to carry out further improvements to the former Mount Zion site around the war memorial, cutting back trees and brambles, strimming embankments and planting donated bulbs and shrubs.

It is planned to arrange further voluntary working parties to continue to improve the site and access to the memorial by 2014, marking the centenary of the outbreak of the first world war.
