Let's do it locally, annually

Todmorden.

I WAS delighted to read that another 38 businesses have signed up to the Totally Locally campaign.

Local shops are the lifeblood of our communities and the campaign's organiser Beth Ward needs to be congratulated for her efforts to revitalise our high streets.

The momentum that has been created in reminding people of the hidden gems on our doorstep has been a real shot in the arm for traders.

So much so that it would surely be fitting for our council to now commit to an annual event that builds on this good work and promotes our independent traders.

In Swansea, for example, the council has introduced an Independents' Day on July 4 every year to celebrate the character and contribution of independent shops.

They have special events, street celebrations and fashion shows with a giant catwalk to raise awareness and promote what's on offer locally.

Wouldn't this be a great way to support our local traders, make sure we remain an attractive destination and provide a fun day out for families?
