A PRESENTATION has marked 50 years of service by a man to the local branch of an international organisation.

Alan Parkes, of Todmorden, has given half a century of service to the York Lodge no. 1700 of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, which covers the Todmorden and Hebden Bridge areas, and others.

The fraternal and community organisation, nicknamed “The Buffs”, not only offers companionship, demonstrated in the surprise presentation for Brother Alan at Todmorden Cricket Club last Wednesday, built also commitment to the community, for which fundraising is often undertaken.

Brother Rodney Young said Alan joined the order in September 1962 and over 50 years had helped raise thousands of pounds for local charities, serving as a secretary, treasurer or trustee in lodges not only in the Todmorden province but Halifax as well.

“Brothers paying tribute to Brother Alan came from Halifax, Chesterfield, Fleetwood, Bradford, Oldham and the West Midlands.

“He has been an inspiration not only to myself but many brothers who have joined the order. His commitment to this great order has been faultless. When he joined the order it flourished in Todmorden with around a dozen lodges, but now we are down to three and need lapsed members to come back and new ones to apply for membership. Alan has worked so hard to keep things going,” said Brother Rodney.

A philanthropic and charitable body, lodges and the provinces that support them are at liberty to undertake whatever activity they consider appropriate for the needs of the community in which they work and live. If you are interested in joining, telephone 07798 858776
