Water power hopes for farm

Water power could be making waves again as a renewable energy if plans for a power system are approved.

Mr Alan Hardy has applied to Calderdale Council for permission to install an automated micro-hydropower system at Great House Clough Farm Great House Road, Todmorden.

The agent for Mr Hardy’s application is Mr Peter Hill, of the Alternative Technology Centre, Hebble End, Hebden Bridge.

The system will comprise a Turgo multi-jet turbine, above ground 3,000 litre water storage tank, 150 metres of 125mm diameter pipe and timber turbine housing.

A supporting statement by the applicant says theaim is to build a low-impact system which will not impact on the ecology of the watercourse.

A stone-lined channel with a stainless steel intake will follow the contour of the clough to a wooden turbine house where the turbine and generator will be located. The discharge of water back to the clough is adjacent to the turbine house.

The turbine is fully automated and controlled by a level sensor in the tank that will open and close a spear valve on the turbine. The system will be grid-connected to the house, says the statement.

Any representations on the application should be lodged with the council’s planning department by March 15.

Other plans received by the council include new window openings to the front and rear, and a raised decking area to the side and rear with a garden room extension (to be carried out in phases) at Glen View, Cragg Road, Mytholmroyd, for Mr Phil Tierney.

Any representations on this application should be with the council by March 8.
