This week the Todmorden Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (TAODS) are showing ‘Calendar Girls’, the stage adaption of Tim Firth’s smash hit film.

If you have seen the film version, you know what to expect. If, like me, you haven’t - brace yourself.

With a few buns, flowers and pieces of well-placed knitting covering their modesty, some of TAODS’ familiar faces and a few gutsy newcomers have pulled off the bravest, brashest and, above all, bustiest show I’ve ever watched at the Hippodrome.

The story follows the members of the Women’s Institute in a small village.

Following the death of Annie’s husband from leukaemia, the women decide to produce a tastefully nude calendar to raise money for the hospital which treated him.

Against all expectations the calendar, and the story of the women involved, goes global and the fallout from this has repercussions which affect each individual.

The cast playing the Calendar Girls themselves deliver a wonderful portrayal of the WI characters and the audience is drawn into their group.

The main six work brilliantly together but also shine as individuals when the scenes focus on each character.

Moni Noszkay is notable as the widowed Annie, while Dawn-Marie Nicholls gives an edge to Cora, whose relationship with her daughter has broken down.

There are also some solid performances from the supporting cast.

The set is excellent and provides a firm foundation for the cast.

In addition, the soundtrack perfectly complements the performance.

Justine Sutcliffe has directed this challenging play with the right degree of subtlety to ensure that you will laugh aloud throughout the show, but you will also find a tear in your eye on occasions.

Go and see it - it’s brilliant.

l ‘Calendar Girls’ runs at the Hippodrome Theatre, Halifax Road, Todmorden, until October 13.

Tickets can be booked online at www.todhip.org or can be purchased from Todmorden Information Centre.

Please note that if you require seats downstairs, you need to book in advance for Saturday. Tonight and tomorrow have only upstairs seats remaining.
