Imagine you’re the winner of a prestigious women-only writing competition, fame and fortune beckons but there is one little problem.

You’re a man.

That is the predicament in which Leonard Loftus finds himself at the beginning of the next TAODS production - a romantic comedy currently in rehearsals at the Todmorden Hippodrome Theatre.

Nobody’s Perfect, written by actor Simon Williamson, is a fast-paced, cross-dressing comedy which promises to turn the notion of the romantic comedy on its head as the audience are let into Leonard’s world; living with his cantankerous father and wayward daughter in a small basement flat when the feminist publisher comes to call.

The cast of four includes the notable returning talents of Malcolm Heywood and Janet Spooner to ensure the jokes come thick and fast and Elizabeth Sutcliffe makes the leap from youth to adult theatre playing Leonard’s daughter Dee Dee.

James Claxton, who designed the set, is also at the helm as director.

“It’s a great little play,” he says. “It’s not deep but it is very, very funny, bordering on farce. It’s the perfect antidote for all this talk of recession and cold weather and a really good way for Todmorden Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (TAODS) to open 2012.”

Rehearsals began early in the New Year and James has been focusing on getting the timing right.

“Good comedy is all about timing. Making it look natural takes a lot of practice but we’ve got an experienced cast who know how to deliver a good punch line, and now the set is up we are having a lot of fun getting the laughs right. It should be a really funny show,” he said.

Nobody’s Perfect will run at the Hippodrome Theatre, Halifax Road, Todmorden, from Wednesday, February 22 to 25. Tickets are available now priced £6 on Wednesday, and £8 from Thursday to Saturday. Concessionary prices of £6 are available Thursday and Friday and students pay only £5 on Thursday.

Tickets are available from the Todmorden Information Centre in person or by calling 01706 818181 or book online at www.todhip.org
