It's sizzling hot mind games as power shifts

TODMORDEN Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (TAODS) opens the new season at Todmorden's Hippodrome Theatre with the play "After Miss Julie" by Patrick Marber.

It is directed by Liz Holland, an extremely experienced actress, but this is her directorial debut with TAODS. The play runs from Wednesday, September 22, to Saturday, September 25.

An intense and disturbing drama, it is set on the night of Labour's landslide victory in 1945. The lady of the house, Miss Julie, descends into the servant's kitchen to seek out John, her father's chauffeur, and succeeds in luring him into a dangerous game of seduction under the nose of his bride-to-be, the cook of the household.

A passionate midsummer's night, however, turns to tragedy as they test the limits of their new freedom.

The cast of three are well into rehearsals and such a frank and intimate play has called for an intense approach to rehearsals. Richard Holley (John), Sarah-Jane Kitchen (Miss Julie) and Claire Walker (Christine) are set to deliver a compelling night's drama.

Miss Julie and John, her father's servant, are vying for power.

She has been recently jilted and he has high hopes for the working-class's new-found power.

Against the backdrop of partying servants Julie and John enter into a sexually charged conversation, as his fianc, Christine, sleeps in the corner.

Throughout the evening and following morning the power shifts from John to Julie, predator to victim, lust to tenderness to violence and back again; ultimately though the real strength comes from Christine.

It is as much about psychological disintegration as the never-ending sex and class wars.
