Tonight (Saturday): Orchestra brings you sounds of summer

Todmorden Orchestra's Summer Concert this season is a special occasion when the audience can sit back, relax, and bask in a programme designed for pleasure and sheer enjoyment.

Every piece in the collection of Classical Favourites has been chosen for its popularity and musical entertainment. The venue is Todmorden Town Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday June 26.

Cascading from the instruments are favourites like Vaughan Williams' Wasps Overture, Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld, Banks of Green Willow by Butterworth, the Elizabethan Serenade by Binge, Clog Dance from La Fille Mal Gardee by Herold and Danse Baccanale from Samson and Delilah by Saint-Saens. Copland features large with his Buckaroo Holiday and Hoe-Down, both from Rodeo, and Fanfare for the Common Man.

And there's still more, this time a marvellous offering of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, played by soloist Catriona Scott who graduated with distinction in a Master's degree from the Royal Northern College of Music.

Catriona has performed at numerous festival engagements and is also Principal Clarinet with the London Contemporary Music Group.

The Classical Favourites Summer Concert will be conducted by Nicholas Concannon Hodges with Andrew Rostron Leader.

Orchestra players can look forward to another concert coming soon which involves travelling along the valley to the Parish Church at Heptonstall. In another first the orchestra has been invited to take part in the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival along with young local violinist Martyn Jackson, now rapidly building a prestigious international reputation,

Commenting on the invitation to take part, Orchestra chairman John Moorhouse said it was an honour for the members to join in the Arts Festival and to welcome Martyn back to play the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto.

In addition the orchestra will perform Holst's St Paul's Suite, The Wasps, Banks of Green Willow and Beethoven's Ruins of Athens.

It is a date for your diary to spend a pleasant summer evening in Heptonstall, on Tuesday July 6, starting at 8 pm.
