Vintage show pulls in record crowds

RECORD crowds turned out to admire a record entry of gleaming vehicles from yesteryear in the 28th Hebden Bridge Vintage Weekend.

More than 10,000 people packed into Calder Holmes Park to take a nostalgic look at vehicles of a bygone transport era over the two-day event, which was organised by the Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge.

The record-breaking event had around 550 entries in the classic, vintage and veteran vehicle sections and the warm weather with the occasional drizzle had crowds flocking to the event.

Sunday's main event had vehicles dating from 1913 to 1968, plus American vehicles, military vehicles, commercial transport, and motorcycles.

On Saturday there were classic cars from 1968 to 1989, plus Rolls Royce's and Bentleys, motorcycles and kit cars. The rally featured such famous names as Lagonda, Lanchester, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Jowett, Morris, Ford, Citroen, Daimler, Talbot, Sunbeam, Singer, Humber, Alvis, Plymouth, Riley, Armstrong Siddeley, MG, Studebaker, Mercedes-Benz and Morgan.

The best in show was a 1913 Scat Tourer, which was also the oldest vehicle on show, owned by Gordon Cornthwaite, of Accrington.

Secretary of Hebden Bridge Rotary Club, Mr Neil Croft, said the number of entries and visitors had made 2010 the best vintage weekend yet.

"It's a record-breaking year. We've had people coming from all over the country to Hebden Bridge to see the vehicles, which also came from all parts of the country," he said. "We would also like to thank everyone for supporting this charity event".

Organiser of the Vintage Weekend Mr Peter Layfield said: "We were pleased that many of the visitors who came onto the park also packed into Hebden Bridge itself and hopefully this will help the local traders and encourage these visitors to return time and again. The quality of vehicles and location were superb and many have said they will be back next year."

On Sunday morning, more than 40 vintage vehicles took part in the scenic run through Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden and Littleborough, before finally arriving back at Calder Homes Park.

There were also numerous stalls including auto jumble and entertainment throughout the weekened with performences from Doctor Jazz Band.

Rotary president Mike Pearson said: "This has been a stunning weekend. We've marvelled at the quality and number of entries – we all have our favourites – it's wonderful to see the work the owners have put in. We're grateful to all who entered their pride and joy and to all the local businesses which support the show. And of course all the visitors who came along over the weekend, we always get terrific support from Hebden Bridge and Calder Valley residents and this year the support has been better than ever. This, along with the work of Rotary volunteers, means we can give as much as possible to charity.

"This year the club have made grants to over 50 local national and international causes. These include 10,000 to help fund converting Hebden Royd council building to a community facility, grants to local scouts, cubs and youth football teams Further afield we have contributed to the Polio Plus initiative and purchased several shelter boxes use to provide emergency shelter in disasters notably the recent Haiti earthquake."
