Vinyl's still smoking for band who release debut disc on 7-inch

VINYL still has an appeal for one upper Calder valley band that has just released its first single on vinyl only.

The Sentimentalists' debut release, Tobacco, will be launched at a gig at the Hebden Bridge Little Theatre, next week on Friday, September 3.

And, although it will be available to sample, but not download, via the band's website, it will only be available to buy on vinyl, a decision taken by the Bradford independent record label Sound Shack, and fully supported by the band.

Phil Fowler, the lead singer, explained: "Because everything's gone digital now it's just so easy to download music, which I think has added to it's devaluation.

"It doesn't have the same meaning as it used to have.

"People can listen to the record on our website but to actually own it they'll have to buy the vinyl.

"The record company see this as an artefact in its own right and more than just a download.

"In terms of making money we realise that not everyone has a record player but if people really want it they will make the effort to buy it."

Phil, who lives in Todmorden, said the Little Theatre was an excellent venue for the Sentimentalists. "We've had a few gigs in Todmorden already, at the Cornholme Working Men's Club, Halifax Road Social Club and up at Kebs, but we've not played in Hebden Bridge yet.

"It is a lovely venue and the audience is right there with you, which is ideal as the lyrics are key to the band's work so the closer the audience is to the lyrics the closer they will be to the Sentimentalists."

At the gig alongside Phil will be Daniel Bath on keyboards, Tony Simms on bass and Dan Hudson on drums, the rhythm section from the soul review band Souled Out. Lyrics are written by Joe Hirst.

The B side on the record Poppa's Stoned On Chemicals will also feature at the gig, which is supported by Fishing for Bishops.

Tickets are priced at 5 and are available through the band's website or on the door.
