Todmorden

The Upper Valley Extended Services team has organised several activities in Todmorden in the coming week for children aged up to 11. On Friday August 13 there will be a den making session at Ferney Lee School from 2-3pm. Todmorden Community College will host a giant paper event on Monday August 16 from 1pm until 2.30pm (to book a place, call 01706 548140). Another den making session will be held at Portsmouth Recreation Ground on Tuesday August 17 from 10am until 11.30am. Children attending the activities must be accompanied by an adult. The next Oak over 50s 'Drop-in Friday' will take place at Central Methodist Church on August 13 from 10am until 3pm. Activities include line dancing, sequence dancing, Tai Chi, board games, singing, the knitting clinic and 'writing for everyone' sessions. Refreshments including soup and a ploughman's platter are available. Tai Chi sessions also take place at Yew Tree Court, Walsden, on Fridays at 9.40am. The next Todmorden Walkabout will take place on August 15. The fortnightly Sunday walks, which explore local towpaths and lower hills, start at 11.15am outside Morrison's main entrance and last about two hours. New walkers are asked to arrive at 11am. Blackburn and Darwen Band will perform in Centre Vale Park on Sunday August 15 as part of the Centre Stage Festival of Brass. The concert will run from 3-5pm. Light refreshments will be available on the day and there is ample space for a picnic. For more information, visit www.atouchofbrass.org.

The Upper Calder Valley Walking Group will be going on a seven-and-a-half mile walk called 'Heather time on Haworth Moor' on Wednesday August 18. Meet outside Haworth Parsonage at 10.30am. Hebden Bridge

Woody, Buzz and the whole gang will be back on the big screen in 'Toy Story 3' at the Picture House from August 13-26. As Andy prepares to depart for college, his loyal toys find themselves in day care. The untamed tots do not play nice so the toys plan for a great escape. Relive the music of The Smiths as Viva Morrissey perform a Smiths themed night at the Trades Club on Friday August 13. The live set will include many Smiths classics, alongside Morrissey's best known solo material and fan favourites. Hibernate will celebrate its first birthday with a night of static, decay and bursts of melody at the Birchcliffe Centre on Thursday August 19 at 8pm. Performers include experimental composer Ian Hawgood, guitarist Talvihorros and sound and visual artist Tom White. Entry is 5 on the door.

Mytholmroyd

'Ted Hughes' Mytholmroyd' will be the next Calderdale Heritage Walk on Sunday August 15. Walkers will visit the settings of Ted Hughes' poems and biographical memories in the village where he was born and spent his early years. Littleborough

A wildlife fete will take place at Hollingworth Lake Country Park on Sunday August 15. The day of games, stalls and wildlife information is being held in support of the Lancashire Wildlife Trust. The event will run from 11am until 4pm. For more information, call 01706 373421.

Rochdale

The Rochdale Feel Good Festival will be held on August 13 and 14. The two-day event will feature live music from bands including The Lightning Seeds, cookery demonstrations from celebrity chefs such as Gino D'Acampo, a food market and much more. Nelson

Halifax

'Woven in the fabric', a play about the life of Martha Crossley of Dean Clough and suffragette Lavena Saltonstall of Hebden Bridge and Halifax, will run at Square Chapel and Halifax Minster from August 14-22. A feast of music, theatre, film, arts and sport will get underway this weekend at the launch of the Halifax Festival.

The festival, which begins on Saturday August 14, will feature 100 events taking place over nine days at various venues in Halifax.

Musical highlights include The South, previously called The Beautiful South but now consisting of a different line-up, who will play new material and old favourites at the Victoria Theatre on August 20.

The Piece Hall will be filled with the sounds of the Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers on August 14 and People's Park will host a brass band concert on August 15.

Dance enthusiasts will be able to take part in a tea dance at Harvey's on August 17 and the Annapurna Dance Company will present a classical Indian dance workshop on August 19.
