ALTHOUGH the Scrooge in me tries to hector and incite me to believe that Christmas is humbug, is too expensive and is simply an excuse for opportunist hedonists, I have only to hear Christmas carols beautifully presented and I am swept up by a wave of nostalgia based on wonderful childhood and parental memories.
I find myself defending against those who suggest that our celebrations might offend a small minority, or that the words of our well-loved traditional carols may not be deemed appropriate, and know that I will continue to appreciate evenings such as
the acclaimed town hall concert of Christmas music and carols organised by the Todmorden Orchestra and Choral Society.
Popular compere Glen Cannon set the tone with a masterly presentation of the items, which ranged from the familiar and customary carols to an American piece plucked out of obscurity by conductor Lawrence Killian and given its first UK performance.
The Fatinitza Galop described as sleigh ride music had an extra dimension with snow swirling round the town hall. Individual performances of controlled excellence highlighted the contribution of the orchestra who provided the support for audience participation in the traditional carols.
The Choral Society achieved some delightful harmonies under the control of Daniel Bath, who continues to delight audiences with his versatility.
This modest but hugely talented musician is an enormous asset to the town.
The youngest members of the Calderdale Youth Choir sang enthusiastically in Spanish and were followed by six young ladies who gave an exceptional performance of beautifully pitched and balanced singing.
Angels from the Realms of Glory could not have been more appropriate.
Credit once again to Richard Pomfret for his ability to inspire these youngsters.
Part of Christmas is about giving and receiving in a spirit of goodwill.
The performers gave and the audience received in an evening of good humour, inspiring music and confirmation of the quality of Todmorden's musicians and singers.
Scrooge has gone quiet and the excitement is beginning to build and it's almost time to get the sprouts on.
Long live Christmas and the reason for our celebrations.
