A UNIVERSITY could be coming to Todmorden as part of a new venture for the town.
Todmorden University of the Third Age (U3A) would provide the opportunity for people to learn new skills, start a new hobby or discuss interesting ideas in small groups led by a volunteer willing to share their knowledge

The project has been given a kick-start by the Partnership for Older People's Projects (POPP) who thought about things which may be of interest to older people in Todmorden. An initial public meeting, which was well attended, showed there was plenty of support for the project.

Tess McMahon, POPP co-ordinator, said: "It's early days but there's so much interest we're sure we're at the beginning of something really valuable for Todmorden people."

The steering committee is planning another public meeting to be held in the town hall on April 30 at 2pm, although the venue is still to be confirmed. Volunteers have already come forward indicating they are willing to lead some groups at the U3A.

Coun Richard White, a member of the steering committee, said several potential subjects have already emerged including arts, sports such as badminton and table tennis, literature, religion and science.

He said: "At the meeting, people will be able to indicate the various subjects they are interested in.

"We are hoping to have the national co-ordinator from head office at the information afternoon and possibly somebody from Bradford U3A."

Coun White said once the Todmorden branch of the U3A has been set up, the programme of events could consist of a monthly general meeting with a speaker and groups might be held weekly. It will not be the usual lecturer or tutor structure but everybody learning from each other instead.

He feels it is important for older people to become involved in activities and remain active in their retirement.

He said: "There are a few societies but they tend to meet in evenings and quite a lot of older people don't like going out in the evenings very much.

"Hopefully we will get their interest and keep them learning.

"I have known a number of people who could not adjust when they retired because they did not know what to do."

The University of the Third Age is a self-help movement for people no longer in full-time work.

It offers the opportunity to pursue learning for sheer enjoyment and its own sake, shared learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups and a chance to make new friendships.

Todmorden Town Council has indicated its support for a branch of the U3A in the town.

At the amenities committee meeting, Coun David O'Neill said it could provide a worthwhile service.

Anybody who would like to volunteer to help out at the public meeting should contact Tess McMahon, POPP co-ordinator, on 01706 815337.
