IT'S a case of back to the way we were at a Calder Valley theatre next week when the Hippodrome reverts to being a cinema for eight days as part of its centenary celebrations.
The Hippodrome Theatre, Halifax Road, Todmorden, stopped showing films regularly from the mid 1950s but as part of the events going on all year to mark its 100th anniversary, Friday, April 18, to Saturday, April 26, it is once again to devoted to the big screen.

A full, detailed, listing of all the films on show appears in an advertisement in this newspaper but as a taster the theatre a few films have been outlined to illustrate the wide range of films that will be screened.

For example, there is a host of delights for children, with "Cars", a great comedy cartoon for younger children on the first Saturday morning followed by "Grease" for teenagers (and those last-chance teenagers who saw the film on its first release 30 years ago!) in the afternoon.

During the week there will be a showing of "The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe" especially for junior schools.

On the second Friday (6 pm) the film will be "The Thief Lord", a magical adventure of two brothers in Venice and based on the Cornelia Funke novel and the week ends with a screening of "Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix".

Other special features brought in by the Hippodrome to enhance the cinema experience for the young and young-at-heart is that a popcorn machine has been brought in and ices, drinks and sweets will be available at reasonable prices, said a spokesman for Todmorden Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, who own the theatre and are organising the festival of film.

The programme will also include four foreign language films, starting with "The Lives Of Others" (German) on Sunday afternoon and this will be followed on Sunday night by a classic Bollywood musical comedy "Dil To Pagal Hai" (Hindi).

On Thursday evening there will be a screening of the hilarious modern Polish comedy, "U Pana Boga" and on Saturday morning the film will be "The Counterfeiters", the 2008 Oscar winner for best foreign language film.

The spokesman said: "For those wanting a few hours entertainment during the day there will be some classic films which look great on the big screen, in the form of 'South Pacific' on Tuesday morning, 'Dr Zhivago' on Thursday afternoon and 'The Lady Killers' on Friday morning.

"The film week opens with the brilliant Martin Scorsese film 'Aviator' on Friday, with the 2008 BAFTA best film winner 'Atonement', which stars James McAvoy and Keira Knightley on the Saturday."

Other blockbusters later in the week include "Four Weddings And A Funeral" and "The Last King Of Scotland".

The spokesman said tickets for all films will be £4 (£3 for children and those over 60). There is also a special deal of four for £12 full (or four for £10 concessions) available for anyone who wants to pay for four or more tickets in advance. These vouchers are available from Todmorden Tourist Information Centre and once purchased can be used for any film or films.

The spokesman said: "TAODS hopes there will be something in this programme for everyone.
