HAVE you noticed the new signs on our valley roads stating "Todmorden, A Blooming Good Town" , Silver Gilt Award 2007.
These signs were kindly funded by Calderdale Community Services.
Our barrier baskets look great now! Many of these are generously sponsored by local firms.
Last October we under planted the baskets with lots of bulbs, then topped them off with
winter flowering pansies.
The barrier baskets have since appeared at their very colourful best.
Bulbs play quite a magical trick on us all. Around Christmas time, the bulb tips pop out of the cold ground. How do they know the time of year? The January snowdrops even managed to keep their proud erect heads above a light snow fall.
Todmorden in Bloom barrier baskets would be very easy for you to copy. You can apply the same principles at home. Even without prior gardening skills, you can try your hand at such easy planting. All sorts of containers can be used, even old boots!
Whatever you choose to put plants in need drainage holes, preferably covered with some broken crocks.
You can seek out compost and plants at our local garden centre, which is also a riot of colourful plants in the spring.
In midsummer you could add a few annuals (the short lived variety of flowers) and that will give you a near all year round display.
Extra flower feed, available in granular or liquid form, will ensure even better growth. "Feed to succeed" for extra flowering - like us humans, with good nutrition it will pay off.
Every new display of flowers will help Todmorden in Bloom's continuous campaign for a cleaner, greener town.
