A VERY different style of jazz comes to the new HX7 Jazz Club in the Calder Valley this month.
Appearing on next Thursday, March 18, Bach ReLoaded play an exquisite fusion of jazz, classical, ambient and world music that has been enchanting audiences since double bassist Jenni Molloy formed the group two years ago.
Although only released i
n late November their debut album was voted the fourth best jazz release of 2009 by The Sunday Times and was one of Radio 3’s Critics’ Choice records of the year.
Jenni’s wealth of experience in both jazz and classical music combined with her technical virtuosity has gained her worldwide critical acclaim with both musicians and audiences alike.
With family roots in Cape Town South Africa – and the infamous District 6 community, destroyed under apartheid – as well as the UK where she was born and is based, Jenni’s musical influences are far reaching and diverse.
Swinging township grooves, passionate tangos and soaring melodies all feature within her work and form the basis for an intense ride of the jazz fusion.
Jenni's innovative and original compositions have been inspired by Bach’s Cello Suites, Solo Violin Sonatas and Partitas and Inventions for the piano.
With verve and virtuosity Jenni takes a melodic or rhythmic phrase from several of these most demanding works, and draws her audience into a musical journey that is both daring and unpredictable, while retaining the utmost respect for arguably the greatest composer in history.
Artists as diverse as Mstislav Rostropovich, Ornette Coleman and The Bad Plus have also provided some of the influence behind this unique project.
Joining Jenni for these performances of unforgettable, cutting-edge ensemble playing will be Stuart MacDonald on soprano and tenor saxophones and Chris Sykes on drums and percussion.
“I’ve worked with all three musicians over the last ten years or so in Tongue & Groove,” said HX7 organiser Dave Nelson, “so I know just how brilliant they are!
“I’m really looking forward to hearing them in new and exciting project. I think that whether you love jazz, are devoted to the classics or simply enjoy live concerts, this is music making at its very best.”
HX7 Jazz is held at the Trades Club in Holme Street, Hebden Bridge, and is normally on the third Thursday in the month.
Future bookings include Michael Janisch’s Saxophone Summit (April 15), Sarah Ellen Hughes with Dave O’Higgins (May 20), the Sam Crockatt Quartet (June 10) and the Eduardo Niebla Quartet (July 8). More information is available at the website www.hx7jazz.com.
