TOP folk and acoustic music stars will join resident singer-songwriter to mark the launch of not just a new CD but a new record label.
Recorded live at Hebden Bridge Trades Club, Trades Roots features some top performances from the cream of the roots music crop over an 18 month period, with a concert to mark its release at the Holme Street, Hebden Bridge, club on July 9 featuring Dave Bowie, Chris Parkinson, Maggie Boyle and legendary British folk blues guitarist Wizz Jones on the bill with Steve Tilston.

Wizz also features on the CD alongside acts from the golden age of UK acoustic performers, including Incredible String band member Robin Williamson, Wizz himself and Michael Chapman, and younger up-and-coming artists such as Martha Tilston, Steve's daughter, and Flossie Malavialle.

Steve, an internationally know artist in his own right who is now also a Hebden Bridge resident, is also on the disc which although initially planned as a benefit disc to raise money to refurbish the club's concert room will now also have a full release.

Trades Club president Ernest Jones explained: "Steve had the idea for the disc and offered to contact all the artists. We wanted to refurbish the concert room and better cater for the sit-down gigs of this type, in addition to improving our sound equipment.

"Initially the idea was to just sell it around the town but found we had got a really good quality product - it's a great CD."

The great singer Dick Gaughan's last release utilised a concert recorded at the club, so its qualities are already well known. And sound engineer Ian McHarg has captured some great performances for the CD, which has been mastered by Ron Angus, said Steve.

"It totally happened by happestance," says Steve. "Ian was playing some of the tapes prior to a gig and said he had a lot of recordings. I said 'let's get the artists' permission and make a CD'."

The Trades Roots Records imprint has now been established and if it goes well there may be further releases, said Steve, as there is a big archive of tapes.

The music doesn't necessarily have to be roots music for future releases either.

Steve said the artists involved should be give a big "thanks". "The CD is a nice thought, putting something back, and all the artists have lent their support and given their contributions free, including people from the States and Canada," he said.

The disc will be available at a special price of £7 at the launch gig (it will otherwise retail at £10). Tickets for the gig are £8 (members) and £10.

Steve regularly hosts the Trades Roots gig, held on one Thursday in each month .
