THIS was the sixth wettest July locally in the past hundred years, following as it did a very wet month in 2007 - see the table below.
1, 196.6mms, 1939; 2, 190.3mms, 2007; 3, 184.9mms, 1920; 4, 179.3mms, 1956; 5, 165.9mms, 1988; 6, 160.2mms, 2008.
Taking this into consideration there were only seven days without a measurable fall of rain and there were three particularly rainy d
ays (see graph), the wettest of which was the 9th with 25.8mms.
Temperatures for the month as a whole (16.0C) were slightly above the 1971-2000 mean of 15.6C, but following a period of average temperatures in the first week, the second and third weeks were particularly disappointing with a mean of only 14.0C.
The last ten days of the month saw temperatures rising, with an average maximum of 23.8C, the hottest day being the 27th (26.7C) and the warmest night the 29th (a humid 16.2C), the average minimum figure for this period being 14.)C. The coolest day of July was the 11th with 14.9C and the coldest night the 21st at 5.8C.
There were few really sunny days, the exceptions being the 1st, 21st, 26th and 27th, but there were only five days with no sunshine at all.
The estimated total of 140 hours gave an average of just over 4.5 hours per day and only 1998 (108 hours) and 2007 (128 hours) have been duller in recent years. The average cloud cover at 09.00 hours was 75 per cent and the relative humidity 80.2 per cent.
Wind speeds were fairly light for much of the month, with westerly directions dominating the pattern during the first and last weeks when temperatures were at their highest. Pressure was low in the first week, falling to 990.9mbs on the 7th, but generally higher thereafter rising to 1025.7mbs on the 23rd, although the average value of 1012.3mbs was below the norm by about 4mbs.
There was no fog or mist to contend with although visibility on a number of days in the latter part of the month was poor, and only twelve mornings were classed as "very good".
Thunder was recorded on the evening of the 10th and on the afternoon of the 11th, accompanied on both occasions by heavy rain.
