AVERAGE temperatures were close to the norm at 13.4C but only a little warmer than those for May which turned out to be the second warmest on record at 13.1C (after 1992, 13.2C).
The hottest days came early in the month (see graphs) and only five days (including the 30th) exceeded 20C, the absolute maximum being 22.7C on the 8th. Night temperatures fluctuated considerably with a number of cold nights, four of which were below
5C, the coldest at 3.0C on the 21st. In contrast there was a number of warm, humid nights, notably the 3rd with 13.6C.

Up to the 16th the month was relatively dry with only 19.5mms out of a total of 119.7mms for June as a whole. Much of this rain came on three days which between them produced about two-thirds of the whole, the wettest being the 26th with 34.9mms (see graph).

Pressure was high, especially in the second week (1027.9mbs on the 9th) but fluctuated after mid-month in relation to the passage of a series of depressions, falling to 999.5mbs on the 22nd. Wind directions also fluctuated but south-westerlies were dominant especially over the final week, with gale force being attained on the afternoon of the 22nd, and fresh breezes thereafter.

The sunniest period was in the second week, with an estimated 54.5 hours out of a total of 157 hours for the month, about average for June in recent years. It was cloudy or overcast on twenty mornings at 09.00GMT, but visibility was generally very good (24 days) and there was no fog or mist at observation times, with relative humidity averaging 71.3 per cent.
