THERE is still time to plant up containers and baskets but the selection of plants available will become less and less as the weeks go by.
When planting there are lots of options of colour combinations you can use or simply keep to one colour in your designs. For example, use the same type of plants in different colours, keep to two different types of plants as we have done in the barri
er baskets around the town. The effect can be stunning.

You will see from the planters outside the market main doors that we have kept to yellow, red and orange and finished each tub with just a small amount of white lobelia, the whole effect being boosted by ivy which has been in the planters for a few years. This again is using just three different types of plants.

If you prefer to use many colours and many different types of plants again the effect will be amazing. No matter what you choose the end result often surprises and rarely fails to please.

Remember gardens and plants in general, no matter where they are, are dependant on we humans for food and water.

There is a wide range of plant food products and in the town this year we have used tiny pellets.

The advantage of these is that after planting up your container you can sprinkle the pellets sparingly on the surface of the compost.

There is no need to fork them in and once they are wet they penetrate the compost and begin their job of feeding the plants.

Another aid to successful containers is water-retaining products. Again there is a choice and they are easy to use. They really do cut down on watering.

It is, however, important to follow the instructions on the packaging. Don't be tempted to use more than the manufacturer's recommendations.

l Bloomin Heroes - Todmorden market traders organised a collection among themselves to finance the planting of the large triple planters at the market doors.

We are extremely fortunate each year to have the support of the traders and the services of Todmorden market staff, especially that of Derek Oldcorn.

Each night the planters are put into safe keeping and brought out each morning for us all to enjoy. Thank you to all of you.

l Silent Army - There is no end to the help we need. If you can help, please telephone 01706 817492 or 01706 812205 or speak to any of our volunteers when out working.
