THE Conservatives gained the Todmorden ward seat at yesterday's Calderdale Council elections, ousting the Liberal Democrats.
Ian Cooper won the seat with a majority of 136 votes, defeating Lib Dem candidate Hilary Myers, who was second, and Labour candidate Steph Booth came third. Christian Jackson, representing the BNP, finished fourth.
Mr Cooper was thrilled was the re
sult. He said: "I'm absolutely delighted at the level of confidence that the people of Todmorden have shown in me and I promise them in return that I will do my very best for the whole of Todmorden.
"It's a fabulous result for the Conservatives throughout the valley and I'm pleased to be part of that success."
Hilary Myers was very disappointed with the result but said she will now be able to put more into her parliamentary future. She said: "I may have been beaten in Todmorden but not in Calderdale. I will fight across the whole of Calderdale."
Despite her third place finish, Mrs Booth was pleased with her campaign and congratulated Mr Cooper on his victory. She said: "I think the brilliant thing that has happened in Todmorden is that we have actually forced a real election and it was tight. Key issues have come up and I thought it was a really good debate.
"The Labour party in Todmorden has bucked the trend by increasing our vote."
Mr Cooper will take over from the outgoing Lib Dem councillor Clare Townley, who stood down at the elections.
The Liberal Democrats successfully defended the Luddenden Foot ward seat at yesterday's Calderdale Council elections.
Christine Bampton-Smith defended her seat by a margin of 285 votes over her nearest rival, Conservative candidate Sarah Jennings. Labour candidate James Fearon finished in third place and BNP candidate John Gregory was fourth.
Speaking after the result, Coun Bampton-Smith thanked the voters for their continued support. She said: "I'm delighted with the result. It would not have been achieved without the hard work of my team. I thank them for their support and the people of Luddenden Foot for voting for me again."
The Leader of the Liberal Group on Calderdale Council narrowly defended her seat at yesterday's local elections.
Coun Janet Battye retained the Calder ward seat with a small majority of 53 votes over second placed Janet Oosthuysen (Labour). Conservative candidate Beverley Carter was third and Ruby Berridge, representing the Green Party, finished fourth.
Coun Battye, who has served on the council for five years, said: "I'm really, really pleased to be back in."
She added that she hopes to continue her hard work and said there are a lot of things to do in Calderdale.
