A TEENAGE driver has been arrested and his 18-year-old passenger left critically injured in intensive care, following a horrific road smash last night, Saturday.
The two men, who are both from Todmorden and believed to be related, careered into a lamp-post at the junction of Halifax Road and Shaw Wood Road, Todmorden at 10.45pm.
The passenger is in a critical condition at Leeds General Infirmary suffering f
rom horrific injuries including a broken neck, fractured skull, bleeding in his skull and fluid in his brain.
The 19-year-old driver, who suffered minor injuries was arrested on the scene for dangerous driving and has been bailed today, pending further inquiries.
The men crashed after their silver Honda Civic car spun out of control and hit a lamppost backwards before hitting a stone wall.
The impact was with such force that the lamppost was knocked out of its fittings.
Firefighters from Halifax, Todmorden and Mytholmroyd, ambulance and police attended the wreckage and the road was shut in both directions for several hours.
PC James Sandford of Calderdale Road Traffic Police, said: "It was a nasty crash, the car was completely written off and the passenger has suffered very serious injuries indeed."
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident.
