REPRESENTATIVES from the Environment Agency and Calderdale Council have told councillors and members of the public that they will try their best to resolve the issues on Centre Vale Park and ensure events such as the agricultaral show can go ahead.
John Bates, Calderdale Council parks manager, said estimates are being sought for new shelter roofs, plans are being drawn up for the toilets and there will be increased monitoring of the pumps.

Mr Bates said: "There are some issues on the park th
at need sorting. I can assure you that I will do my level best to make sure they are resolved. We are well aware of the show and events and we don't want to impact on that."

He added that the new shelter roofs will be made of a stronger material which will better withstand vandalism and some of the toilets should be open again by Christmas if all goes to plan. The toilets by the pavilion will take longer.

Gully gates are being put in by the playground to relieve flooding and the council will be meeting with the EA to look at other issues in certain areas on the fields.

Arshad Hussain, from the EA, said the problem with the pumps is being investigated. He said: "They keep tripping out but hopefully it's been sorted. Our mechanical experts from the contractors are having a look.

"Calderdale and ourselves are quite happy with how the drainage is working in some areas. From the EA point of view, it's mostly working to how we expect."

Members of Todmorden town council amenities committee took the opportunity to ask questions about the state of the park. Coun Joe Rez said the park is in a worse state than it has ever been before and Coun Phil Walters was concerned about the grass not growing.

Coun Walters said: "The seeding to me seems totally inadequate. It's just not growing at all. Quite a lot has been thrown down. There is a lot of ryegrass in it which holds water and unless that is taken out the park will be continually wet and soggy even when the weather is dry."

Sue O'Neill, also from the EA, said the grass was a Sport England specification. She added that the the flood defence scheme was never meant to solve all the land drainage problems in the valley and the work had taken longer due to poor weather conditions preventing the use of machinery.

Coun John Rodgers said: "One of the things people are most concerned about, having seen the work go on for more than planned and a lot of money spent on it, is that a set of contractors have not done their job properly."

Coun Hilary Myers said that although she understood concerns from people saying the park is ruined, a slight loss of facility had to be accepted to meet the more serious need of protecting homes from flooding.

Coun Myers and Coun Margareta Holmstedt thanked Calderdale Council for their work on the playground and welcomed the news about the shelters.
