CALDER Valley MP Chris McCafferty is co-sponsoring the Mortgage Repossession (Protection of Tenants etc) Bill, which seeks to allow tenants to apply to a court for a delay of up to two months when their home is being repossessed.
The Bill applies to residential-turned-let (RTL) properties, where there is an owner-occupier mortgage, and the borrower has not obtained the lender’s consent to rent out their property.
“Unauthorised tenants” are then left without the protection of current housing law, despite the fact they may have signed tenancy agreements with the landlord.
Mrs McCafferty said: “It is estimated that there are currently 324,000 residential-turned-let households in the UK and many of those tenants are not entitled to local authority housing should they become homeless.
“Furthermore, according to the most conservative estimates, last year over 2,000 RTL tenancies were subject to repossession proceedings.
“Many of these tenants are only aware of the repossession when bailiffs arrive on their doorsteps.
“This is unacceptable and I look forward to helping the Bill’s Sponsor, Dr Brian Iddon MP, get this Private Member’s Bill through its Parliamentary stages and into law as soon as possible.”
