A LARGE number of people attended the first public meeting of U3A (University of the Third Age) Todmorden and indicated the range of topics they would like to see offered.
Thirty-seven subjects were suggested, including the popular themes of literature, walking and family history, closely followed by music, current affairs and dancing.
The programme offered by the U3A will take the format of a meeting once a month for discussion of a topic of interest, as well as more regular meetings where members would be able to join in smaller groups to share their knowledge and experience of particular topics or activities.
The committee plans to start with five or six topics, adding more later. Each group will decide its own programme and arrangements.
Acting chairman John McNair said a number of speakers have offered to contribute, including, Jack Taylor on "The buildings of Todmorden" and Lynne Midwinter on "Keeping fit as the years go by".
The first steps towards setting up the U3A Todmorden branch had been taken by Todmorden Neighbourhood Scheme and its organiser, Tess McMahon, spoke at the meeting about the help the scheme had given. She said: "We want to see all the older people in Todmorden making the most of the opportunities U3A offers for interesting and worthwhile activities."
Mike Long, from the national U3A office, outlined the help the Todmorden branch will receive, such as financial support, a regular magazine and contact with other U3A branches.
Mayor of Todmorden, Coun Pam Lally, opened the meeting. She said: "Todmorden will be the better for the stimulating opportunities for older people and we welcome the new U3A."
U3A is a cooperative organisation of people no longer in full-time work which provides opportunities for learning and social activity. For more information about the Todmorden branch, visit www.u3atod.org.uk, email enquiries@u3atod.org.uk or call 01706 816924.
- The first branch meeting will be held on Thursday May 22 in the Central Methodist Church Hall, Bramsche Square, from 2-4pm.
Pam Warhurst, a key figure in many Todmorden initiatives, will speak on "The Joys of Learning" and members will then be able to register to join specific study or social groups. Admission to the meeting is free.
