A ‘cathedral of Unitarianism’

The historic Grade I listed Todmorden Unitarian Church is open over two days at Heritage Weekend.

On Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13, the church, once dubbed “the Cathedral of Unitarianism”, will be open from 10am to 4pm on both days.

Now run by a committee for the Historic Chapels Trust, it is a busy venue for a wide range of community events including weddings, concerts and festivals.

Like the equally resplendent Todmorden Town Hall, it is part of the legacy left to Todmorden by the Fielden family, who were Unitarians and philanthropic mill owners in the 19th century, their massive Waterside Mill complex occupying the site below the church, where Morrison’s supermarket now stands.

The church is just off Rochdale Road near the town centre, reached via Honey Hole.

Incredible Edible Todmorden volunteers will be serving tea and cakes.
