AN APPRENTICE from Todmorden came face to face with royalty at the opening of a new skills centre.

Sam Groom, 22, presented a pen made by him and two other apprentices to HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, at the opening of the KITS Engineering Skills Training Centre, Brighouse, last week.

“It was quite nerve-wracking,” said Mr Groom, who is studying mechanical engineering at the centre.

“I’m doing quite well on my course and got asked to make the pen.

“When we first designed it we thought it would be really difficult but it took me about a day and a half to make it.”

The centre has undergone refurbishment so that it can now offer apprentices hands on experience without having to share machines.
