Attempt to knock ‘Honest John’ off his plinth

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an attempt was made to remove the statue of John Fielden from its plinth in Centre Vale Park.

A member of the public contacted officers after finding a rope around the head of the statue on Tuesday at 6pm. It had been moved slightly on its plinth.

PCSO Elayne Wright, from the Upper Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We are pretty certain that it’s a bit more than a kids’ trick.”

She said that although the statue appears to be made of bronze, it is actually made of a different material.

John Fielden, known as “Honest John”, piloted the Ten Hours Act through Parliament in the 19th Century.

Anybody who saw any suspicious activity near the statue on Tuesday is asked to contact PCSO Wright on 01706 817237.
