The crowds gathered as it grew darker in Todmorden last Saturday afternoon - waiting for the moment when Mayor and Mayoress of Todmorden, Coun Michael and Nikki Gill, called lights, camera, action!

As they switched on Todmorden’s Christmas lights by the tree at the Peace Garden next to Todmorden Town Hall, photographer Jim Fitton was on hand to take some pictures of the moment and there was plenty of action too.

Those attending had been warmed up on a chilly night by Todmorden Community Band whose brass instruments rang out loud with a selection of music and seasonal songs, while Todmorden Choral Society lent their voices to complete and enjoyable late afternoon of Christmas sounds.

Father Christmas dropped in to the proceedings, and a collection was taken for the Mayor’s charities in his Mayoral year, Independent Living, Todmorden, and the Hippodrome Theatre, Todmorden.

With events planned to run fairly seamlessly through the day, Kidsfest getting the festive ball rolling earlier, the Lamplighter Parade followed.

Todmorden Market was open especially late and the many people who watched the events were able to have a look around as a result, keeping things busy until 7.30pm, said the Mayor.
