CONSERVATIONISTS joined forces to give the banks of the River Calder a spruce up.

Residents from across Todmorden met up to spring clean the Tipside area, which runs alongside the river.

The annual event was organised by the Todmorden Riverside Improvement Group, in collaboration with Calder Future.

Project manager Penny Bennett said: “It’s our big community work day which includes balsam bashing, litter picking and a general clean-up of the area.

“We got a large skip and some of us even got in the river to pull out shopping trolleys and other rubbish that ends up in there.”

As a reward for all their hard work the group enjoyed a barbecue, followed by nature walks and activity sessions for children.

Penny said: “We try and do things that will appeal to children as it’s a real family day. We want people to see the fantastic, beautiful things on their doorstep and help to look after them.”
