Councillor vows to keep Calder ward

LABOUR has taken control of the Calder ward for the first time in 15 years thanks to Coun Dave Young’s victory.

Coun Young, who will now sit on both Calderdale Council and Hebden Royd Town Council, beat his nearest rival by a majority of 618 seats in Thursday’s poll.

Coun Young, who took the seat from the former Liberal Democrat David O’Neill, who chose to stand as a Independent Liberal in the Todmorden ward, vowed to do his best to make the ward a safe seat for the Labour Party long into the future.

“We have had some lean years in this ward and I am going to make sure it continues to be represented by Labour for some time to come,” said Coun Young.

The result was: Stephen Curry (Ind) 262; Gail Lund (Con) 915; Alan McDonald (Green) 754; Hywel Morgan (Lib Dem) 1042; Dave Young (Lab)1660.
