Councillors give support to flood defence scheme

COUNCILLORS have recommended approval of proposed flood defences along Rochdale Road, Todmorden, to protect the town in future years.

The work, which is part of phase three of the Todmorden and Walsden flood defence scheme, will include the construction of a flood wall from Knowlwood Road, Shade, to Morrison’s supermarket.

Despite some concerns about the height of the proposed wall, which they felt would be detrimental to the visual amenity of Todmorden, members of the town council’s development committee voted in favour of the plans as the work will help to provide protection from flooding.

Coun Rob Goldthorpe said: “If this is going to protect the town from flooding, we should approve it, even if it might be disruptive while they do it.”
