An armed robber walked into a Todmorden grocers and off-licence brandishing a knife and threatened a female staff member, before escaping with cash and cigarettes.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the “nasty” incident which happened at Hartley Grocers & Off Licence on Oak Avenue on Thursday, December 11.

The robber, who covered his face during the terrifying incident, entered the store at 8.10pm and demanded money from the till, as well as cigarettes and tobacco.

Threatening the woman behind the counter with a knife, he told her to put the cash in one plastic bag and the cigarettes in to another. He then made off in a vehicle down Oak Avenue in the direction of Park Road.

The man police are looking for is described as white, aged in his mid 20s, 5 ft 11 ins tall and of slim build. His face was covered by a black scarf and he had a grey hooded top on with the hood pulled up. His eyes were quite narrow and he was wearing blue jeans.

Detective Constable Natasha Wilson, of Calderdale CID, urged any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

“This was a nasty incident which has left the victim very shaken,” she said.
