PUPILS at a school are firmly in the driving seat thanks to a parents’ group whose members have raised money to buy a new minibus with the help of the community.
Transport is now at Shade School’s command after the Shade Parents Working Group, with the help of the school community and local businesses, raised £5,500 for the minibus, which they collected from Hope Commercials, Todmorden last Friday.
Chairperson of the group, Catherine Greenwood, said: “It’s a project we started because we wanted people who help us to see something for their money. Our old minibus looked as though it would break down so decided to fundraise towards a new one.”
With the parents’ group growing in number they began a busy academic year of fundraising.
“Our annual summer fair was brilliantly supported by parents at the school and we have done a number of other different things. Through the year we have Easter parties, school discos for the juniors, we made alcohol-free mulled wine for Christmas week - and we bake a lot!” said Catherine.
A major success this year was a school 2012 calendar in which the children featured, each class portraying the changing seasons.
Printed by Creative Media, the company also helped by sponsoring the calendar, and around 30 of the town’s smaller businesses lent their support by taking out snall ads in it. Mother’s and Father’s Day schemes also helped and the Border Rose pub, Walsden, ran a Christmas raffle for the appeal.
