Emergency meeting as members consider club future

An emergency meeting will determine the fate of one of Todmorden’s oldest social clubs.

Members of Cornholme Working Men’s Club will discuss whether it has a future tonight after it ran into financial difficulties.

The club is currently open for business, despite mounting debts.

It owes £12,000 to a brewery on top of unpaid gas and electricity bills.

But club steward Marc Fisher said that he hoped that the club would continue to operate beyond tomorrow’s meeting.

“I’m optimistic that the committee members will be able to reach a solution that allows the club to remain open,” he said.

Marc, who became steward of the club two and a half years ago, said that despite attracting more members since his arrival the club was struggling to overcome the debt it previously had.

“When I arrived the club was in a real mess but I put some real ales on and started running discos and live bands, which livened things up, but we’ve struggled to pay off the debts.”

The club, which is 115 years old, is located on Woodbine Terrace in Todmorden.
