MR Peter Watson gave an amusing talk on “Magic and Medicine” to Todmorden Ladies Probus Club.
He gave examples of “cures” practised in earlier times, when a lot of mystery surrounded medicine - with a bit of witchcraft thrown in for good measure!
There were no health and safety laws, and most people had a lot of faith in some of the unusual practices of the day, he said.
Even today a certain amount of faith must be employed when visiting the doctor, he joked, but at least it was clear bat droppings and toad skins could not be consieered beneficial in treating illnesses!
Mrs Pat Hughes gave the vote of thanks, and refreshments were served by Mrs Jean Taylor and Miss Davina Cockcroft.
The next meeting will be on July 11, with a talk on Anne Lister of Shibden Hall.
