A FRIENDS of Todmorden Library Group is being formed, with the aim of being ready to fight any cuts in service, should they emerge.
Stpeh Booth, who fought the Calder Valley Parliamentary seat for Labour at last year’s General Election, has organised a meeting to set the group in motion.
Although it was not yet clear what might happen in Calderdale, she felt it was important to be ready in case any cuts to the service were proposed.
“There is a movement across the country with people wanting to protect their libraries, and they are setting up ‘Friends’ groups.
“The aim is to keep our library and keep it staffed - the staff are so important and the library is an integral part of our community,” she said.
The first meeting will be at the Bear Cafe, Rochdale Road, Todmorden, at 6pm next Tuesday, February 8, and Mrs Booth urged everyone who might be affected to come along.
“The library is used by mothers and children, students, people who are out of work, elderly people and more,” she said.
It gave access to books, music, IT facilities and local history archives, among other things.
