Residents young and old are invited to mark the transition from winter to spring with drums, music and the sharing of food.

Psychotherapist and community rhythm and dance facilitator Filomena Ianni has organised a “Winter Passage to Light” event at Mytholmroyd Community Centre from 3.30pm to 7pm on Saturday, February 1.

Filomena, owner of Full Circle Therapeutic Pathways in Hebden Bridge, said: “Winter Passage to Light is planned as a small community event, involving a community drum circle, music performance and community dancing, for everyone to participate, share, create and celebrate. The theme is based on the passage from the darkness of winter to the first flickers of the impending spring, still stirring in the ground, and the promise of the return of the brighter light in the coming weeks.

“With friends and collaborators Kim Metcalfe and Jayne Johnson we have also built into the event a small atmospheric musical number performed on a variety of instruments and a space for anybody to bring their own instruments and improvise together or dance.

“This is meant to be a hope and optimism boosting perspective for all of us who lose sight that this is a cycle, as many things in life, and that the light will come, is in fact on its way. This wants to also encourage more communal and less isolated ways of coping with difficult times in the year.

“We hope to continue with initiatives like this a different times throughout the year and possibly in the years to come.”

The event, expected to attract 30 people, is a follow-up to a drum circle that was held at Gibson Mill in November to remember those lost during 2012 and to celebrate the continuing life circle.

Filomena said she hopes to continue with initiatives like this at different times throughout the year.

Tickets for the not-for-profit event are £7 adults, £1 children, and participants are encouraged to bring food to share. People can pay at the door, but must book their place in advance by either calling 01422 844926 or emailing filo@fullcircle.uk.net
