1,300 visit Made In Tod: Spotlight shines on a very talented town
TODMORDEN'S businesses, trades, crafts and talented townsfolk were put firmly in the spotlight at a special event.
More than 1,300 visitors turned out for Todmorden Business Association's 2010 Made In Tod! two-day event – which was up on last year total. About 1,000 people ensured exhibitors were kept busy explaining their products and services throughout Saturday after a good start on a rain-affected Friday.
The event was supported by Business Link, Calderdale Council, Upper Calder Valley Renaissance and the Totally Locally Campaign. Todmorden Town Council also played a key role in refunding hire costs for the hall.
Voluntary groups played their part with Todmorden Rotary Club manning the door and keeping a record of where visitors had travelled from, and the Friends of Overgate Hospice, Elland, provided refreshments.
Nicki Hewson-Betts, of Todmorden Business Association, said there was no doubt the event had been massively successful and achieved its aims.
"People were still coming in as some of the stalls were being taken down on Saturday afternoon," she said. " There were a lot of new businesses at the event and they have had really successful days.
"The businesses I have spoken to were very pleased and achieved what they wanted to achieve."
Nicki said some comments made by visitors summed it up, with one man asking businesses where they were located and another saying "you wouldn't have thought we had all this in Todmorden."
The aim of Made In Tod! was to act as a showcase for a wide variety of services and products made or available in the town, ranging from cheese production to plumbing via crafts, pet services, tourist information – and even a magic show.
Nicki said: "It shows how viable Todmorden is as a place to do business."
Todmorden Business Association colleague Lynne Midwinter said this year's event had built on the success of last year's and the support of all who had taken part or visited the exhibition was greatly valued.
Rotarians had welcomed visitors and the Overgate team had provided Fairtrade produced tea and coffee, marking Fairtrade Fortnight in the year the town had been given Fairtrade status.
Visitors had come from both sides of the Pennines and in some cases further afield.
Lynne explained that Todmorden Town Council's support for hiring the hall had allowed costs to be kept as low as possible, ensuring small businesses were able to take part as well as larger concerns.
