Family and friends lifted a toast to celebrate the 90th birthday of a former Mayor of Hebden Royd.

Christopher Patrick O’Brien marked the occasion with a party at Ferney Lee Residential Home, Todmorden, on January 2, attended by his two daughters, Christine and Amanda, and more than 35 of his family and friends.

Born in Ballinrobe, Ireland, Chris joined the RAF in 1943 and met Hebden Bridge born Sheila, who became his wife of 65 years.

After an apprenticeship at North British Locomotive Ltd in Glasgow, they returned to Hebden Bridge where they settled for more than 50 years.

Chris worked in heavy engineering all his life, including designing the wheel system that turns the huge telescope at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire.

He worked hard for the community in Hebden Bridge. He was a councillor for 20 years from 1969 and was honoured to be Mayor of Hebden Royd in 1985.

He was a school governor and served on committees of various charities and groups.

Chris also had links with Todmorden, where he was a member of the Knights of Saint Columba for many years.

He would like to thank everybody for their good wishes and staff at Ferney Lee, his home for the past five years.
