A gathering of brass expected to bring thousands into town

BRASS band enthusiasts will gather next week for the third annual Hebden Bridge Heritage Weekend.

More than 5,000 people are expected to attend the two-day event, organised by Hebden Bridge Brass Band, which will feature a gala concert on Saturday June 19 and a march and hymn tune contest on Sunday June 20.

The heritage weekend aims to celebrate the band's connection with the famous Mortimer family and organisers are delighted that Martin Mortimer, son of Harry Mortimer, and his wife will be the guests of honour at the gala concert.

Steve Gardner, chairman of Hebden Bridge Brass Band, said: "We hope that the weather is favourable for us but either way it promises to be another entertaining weekend.

"It's been more difficult this year in tough economic times but thanks to generous support from local businesses and the council, it should be a successful event again.

"We are hoping to launch a Mortimer walk around the various sites of Hebden Bridge involved in the life of the family."

The gala concert at the Picture House will feature Hebden Bridge Brass Band and guest soloist Joe Cook, principal Eb bass player with the Black Dyke Band. It will be one of Hebden Bridge's first public appearances since winning promotion to the championship section.

Steve said: "The local community can celebrate with the band, which will be promoted to the championship section in 2011."

Thirteen bands have entered the march and hymn tune contest so far, all hoping to win the trophies and prizes donated by local businesses and Hebden Royd Town Council.

Starting at 1.30pm, each band will march and play along Bridge Gate towards St George's Square, where they will play a march and hymn tune before an adjudicator.

Tickets for the gala concert on Saturday June 19 at 7pm are priced 10 for adults and 6 for children. Tickets are available from Hebden Bridge Visitor and Canal Centre on 01422 843831 or from Steve Gardner on 01422 203103 or 07813 110126.
