Abraham Ormerod Centre: Council tried, but the price was too high
CALDERDALE Council did attempt to put in a bid for the Abraham Ormerod site, but the price was too high, it has been revealed.
Todmorden ward Coun Ian Cooper, who is chairman of the Todmorden Town Centre Regeneration board, said Calderdale had attempted to submit an expression of interest in acquiring the Abraham Ormerod site, which was in the ownership of Calderdale and Kirkless NHS Trust, but it would not have been affordable for the authority.
Coun Cooper explained that due to a significant difference between the district valuer's assessment of the site's worth and the value Netto placed on it if bought on the open market, the bid could not be progressed.
It had been indicated to the council that a rival bid, which transpired to be Netto's, was considerably higher. It has been revealed the supermarket paid 700,000 for the site.
"It was so large it was impractical, particularly when dealing with public funds," he said. But the council would have a role in establishing the design and materials used in any new development and if it were to go ahead would work to get something positive for the town out of it, he said.
Coun Cooper (Con, Todmorden) was speaking about the board's ongoing work to draw together strategies from disparate sites to benefit Todmorden.
