TOP playwright Alan Bennett has lent his support to Friends of Todmorden Library’s first weekend festival later this month.

Having decided to stage a festival, they wrote to Yorkshire-born Mr Bennett to tell him it was taking place and were delighted to receive a personalised doodle of himself, adorned with a “good luck” message, very shortly afterwards.

The drawing is used on the front cover of the programme for the event, which runs from Friday, September 30, to Sunday, October 2.

Steph Booth, of FOTL, said: “I got in touch with him a couple of weeks ago and got a great response as he wrote back within a week, enclosing the message of support. He feels, as we do, that it is a very important issue.

“It’s absolutely fantastic to get a personalised response when we asked if he would do anything.”

The Friends group was set up to promote and support the town’s library at a time when many up and down the country are threatened by cuts and Mrs Booth urges as many people to not only attend festival events but use their library all year round.

Mr Bennett, originally from Leeds, is a highly-respected dramatist for stage, television and film.
