Alan's dream creatures brought from rainforest to lecture hall

Do you want to share your ethnic holiday hut with leeches, rats and with unidentified creatures hanging from the walls?

Many would say no, but for Alan Davies a trip to the rain forest had long been his dream.

Son Lee's photography, along with Alan's vivid descriptions provided Todmorden Photographic Society with a fascinating insight into the world of the jungle with their presentation 'Wildlife of the Malaysian Rainforest'.

They walked through places surrounded by clouds of butterflies, including the RajaBrooks Birdwing with its 8" wingspan. Amongst the luxuriant undergrowth were many snakes, often venomous. Alan's methods of tempting the snakes and insect life towards Lee's camera were often seen as somewhat risky by their patient guide.

On one occasion, he waved his fingers at a 4" flying creature with a proboscis like a hypodermic needle and a buzz like a Cessna – apparently this was definitely not to be recommended!

Other residents included monitor lizards, iguanas and delightful monkey families – much like our own, with charming babies, and juveniles going berserk!

The conditions were definitely challenging for the photographer, as light levels deep under the canopy were very low. Lee's flash guns fell foul to the high humidity, and he had to rely on the camera's own flash – and his Dad's expertise with a torch! However, excellent images were captured.

President, Ian Wright, thanked Alan and Lee for their presentation.

- Todmorden Photographic Society meets every Wednesday at St Michael's Community Centre, Cornholme at 7.45 pm. The next guest speaker is John Barton on September 8.
