Be Treesponsible this weekend
Dongria Kondh with Patrick Topham at Boots in Crown Street, Hebden Bridge
Treesponsibility is gearing up for its busiest ever tree-planting season, with 10,000 trees to plant before Christmas.
The group is inviting Calder Valley people to join their autumn gathering this weekend.
Co-ordinator Dongria Kondh explained: “It’s a bit of a tradition for us to mark the beginning of the planting season by renting out a camping barn and hosting a volunteer weekend – we go out tree-planting in the daytime, and return for scrummy food and good company at Height Gate Hostel high on the hills above Hebden Bridge. It’s an opportunity for new people to get involved and find out all about our project.”
This year’s planting site is at Warland Farm, a 5.5 hectare site on the steep hillside above Warland. The site overlooks another Treesponsibility planting site at Steanor Bottom (behind the old Bird i’th’ Hand pub), which is now well on its way to becoming a woodland. People can either join Treesponsibility for the daytime plantings (ring 07847 815 926 for transport details), or for the whole weekend at the hostel for which there is a £25 cost for food and accommodation (Friday supper to Sunday lunch), but concessions are available. Email treesponsibility@yahoo.co.uk to book. You’ll need a warm sleeping bag and appropriate clothing (boots and waterproofs).
