Cambridge offer delights sixth former Rebecca
ANYONE with dreams of attending Oxford or Cambridge should just go for it; that was the advice of one Todmorden High School student, who has been offered a place at King's College, Cambridge.
Despite her modesty Rebecca Senior has, and continues to, work very hard at school and beyond to secure her offer for a place on the natural science course, for which she needs an A* and two As in her A-levels.
"I would say to anyone who might want to apply to Oxbridge to go ahead, even if you are from a background where family members normally don't go to university at all. Just go for it; whatever happens the experience is always useful," urged Rebecca.
"If you look at the questions out of context they look really difficult but the panel talk you through them and are really helpful."
Having had a set of mock interviews Rebecca was ready for the real thing. Consisting mainly of scientific questions, which had to be worked out there and then, the interviews are designed to show how the candidate's thought processes work. These probing questions ensure that only one in three interviewees are offered a place.
But Rebecca won't be here in August to get her results in person as at that time she will be in the Amazon tracking indicator species, such as macaws, howler monkeys and river dolphins, for a scientific survey. Mum, Colette, will have to email her the results.
Mrs Senior said she was 'chuffed to bits' for her. "I couldn't be more proud of her. Staff at the high school have also gone out of their way to help; they've been great."
It's not just her school work that's helped Rebecca get so far; running the high school's Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme, taking part in expeditions and planning for her trip to the Amazon have all meant she is fuelled with positive energy.
Always up for a challenge Rebecca said she's chosen a course in natural science as it offers her the chance to 'mix things up a bit' and as it's the top university in the country, and the third in the world, in this subject area, she hopes it's the right place to realise her ambitions.
"One of my goals is to visit every continent before I'm 30. I've got a way to go as I've only done Europe and Africa so far but with the Amazon trip I'll have been to South America. Maybe I could go to Antarctica to survey the penguins," joked Rebecca.
