Cinema could soon be under new leadership

AN upper Calder Valley cinema could be under new leadership by April 2012.

Hebden Bridge Town Council has opted to head up an ambitious £412,000 asset transfer bid for Hebden Bridge Picture House. The town council must now meet Calderdale Council’s deadline of December 1, 2011, to prove it has the ability to finance its plan.

Coun Susan Press, chairwoman of Hebden Royd Town Council’s Picture House committee, said: “This marks a significant move forward in the role which the town council is playing in our community life.”

Todmorden residents have been calling to be consulted on the matter, arguing that the cinema should be regarded as as upper Calder Valley asset. In a letter to the Todmorden News, Doug Simpson said as the cinema is owned by Calderdale Council, he considers that he and other Todmordians have a stake in it.

“I think that people throughout the upper valley should have a say in this, and the opportunity to be part of whatever community group might eventually take over the cinema,” Mr Simpson said.
