Clarets Corner: There are no easy games in Premiership

WE saw the good and bad of Burnley's Premiership season in just a few days last week.

The difference between home and away form couldn't have been clearer than in the excellent point earned against Arsenal at Turf Moor last Wednesday and the dispiriting result against Wolves on Sunday.

A defensive error helped give Arsenal their goal but the Clarets were relentless in attacking play – as Owen Coyle put it, going toe-to-toe, with the Gunners.

Against Wolves it all seemed more depressing as two more defensive errors were punished.

That's not to take anything away from Wolves at all.

But on this occasion it wasn't lack of speed which saw the Clarets concede but an inability to stand up physically to a determined Kevin Doyle, among others.

Burnley had similar problems in their only home defeat so far, against Wigan, and in away dates at Stoke and Blackburn.

What is worrying me is that these physically stronger teams – and I stress I am not suggesting any of these opponents resort or have resorted to foul play – are the ones that before the campaign began supporters hoped would be winnable or at least drawable.

Fans also have to get a reality check – there are no easy games at all in a Premiership campaign which has, Burnley included, so far thrown up plenty of surprises.

Bolton are also a side who play to strength and it makes the Boxing Day test at Turf Moor a very intriguing and important one.

Finding a way to get results against these teams will be the key to staying up.
